The mint julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938. Originally a vehicle for medicine...now it is the traditional crowd pleaser at Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.
The mint julep requires just the right balance of ingredients...sweetness, mint and bourbon.

2 c sugar
2 c water sprigs of fresh mint crushed ice Early Times Kentucky Whiskey Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water for 5 minutes. Cool and place in a covered
container with 6-8 sprigs of fresh mint. Refrigerate overnight.
Make one julep at a time by filling a glass with crushed ice. Add 1 T mint syrup and 2 oz Kentucky whiskey. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with fresh mint sprig. |
